One Year of Home Ownership: Before & After

Yesterday marked our one year of home ownership. I mean, to be technical, Mr. T owns this joint and he just lets me live here and run the show. But who needs to be technical?

One year, you guys. One whole year.

If you were around last year, you know what a crazy struggle it was to get this place. We were set to close in the beginning of December and then we hit a huge snag that blew everything up. We spent a good month scrambling and not knowing if we'd get this house or if we'd even have a place to live since we had to be out of Mama C's in mid December (we all had to be out. She wasn't throwing us out). And, all of the craziness left us living in a dorm room for two weeks.

And now we are a year later. And I'm pretty darn thankful.

So, I thought it would be fun to take a look at some before and afters. Sometimes I don't even realize how much we've done to this house.

And bear with me because some of these pictures are the worst. Mostly because of the terrible lighting in our house. And, well, it was hard to get the exact same picture. And, taking pictures of rooms is a lot harder than taking pictures of garlands, you guys (however, you can tell my picture taking abilities have totally improved).

The Living Room Before

The Living Room After

We painted the whole room and the ceiling. And let me tell you, it was fun. The previous owners had wallpaper which I thought we could take off. But once we started we realized that would get us into a huge mess we weren't prepared for (like potentially replacing the walls). So we decided to just paint over the wall paper. It's totally not hard, just prime it and sand the seams. It helps that it's an old house -- the walls aren't smooth and regular anyway.

My pride and joy in this room is actually two things:

Our wall which was featured over on the Holl & Lane blog. I can't take the credit because Mr. T did it. But holy hell it's such an amazing addition to the room.

And the wall behind the fireplace. It's actually textured wall paper. The funny thing about this room is that Mr. T and I planned it differently when we bought the paint. We were going to pain one wall the darker color and the other walls the lighter color and the color that's now in our kitchen and hallway. But when we started the living room we scrapped that and used the light blue on the ceiling. I didn't know what to do with this wall, but I knew I wanted the texture wall paper. I tested a small spot with a little of the darker paint and we liked it. Then I started to wipe it off and we realized it made this cool antique look. So we just went with that.

The Kitchen/Dining Before

The Kitchen/Dining After

So, uh, the biggest change here is the mess. We painted the walls and we have a "new" table from Mr. T's mom. Mr. T also changed out the ceiling fan for a pretty light and learned how to put a junction (I think that's what it's called) box in.

And can we all talk about our new fridge?!?

My pride and joy in this room is the wall behind the table. It was so easy. I really wanted a fun accent wall in this room. But with the blue paint and red chairs I was scared to paint the wall a bright color and not have it look crazy. As we were painting this wall (it's dark gray) I wasn't feeling it. So I went to my craft room and cut out some farm shapes with adhesive vinyl and my die cutting machine and BOOM instant interesting accent wall. I love that I can easily take the shapes off. Though why would I want to?

The Craft Room Before

The Craft Room After

It took me a long time to think about what I wanted to do with this room. I bought the curtains early on and they inspired this colorful bohemian feel to the room. The pain was actually a $9 clearance pick up at Lowe's. We had no idea what we were going to do with it until I realized it would look awesome in this room.

This room is no longer the craft room, it's Chaotic & Collected HQ. And I love the space so much.

My pride and joy in here is all of my card stock. Really, just look at it. Side note: we never intended to take the closet doors off. We took them down to paint and I loved it so much that off they went. But, really I think I love the chalkboard wall.

The Extra Bedroom Before

The Extra Bedroom After

I don't have a good picture of this room because it was originally Mama C's room. Then it was an office and then we decided to have an extra bedroom with a desk so we could use it as an office.

The Three Seasons Room Before

The Three Seasons Room After

We didn't do a ton here (yet). We took down the blinds so you can see the windows and our yard. It totally made the space something. And we decorated some. We also moved our old fridge out there so now it's the beer fridge. Half of the room is also our workout space.

The Hallway Before

The Hallway After

We painted the hallway the same color as the kitchen since it's connected. We also replaced all of the doors (which was a nightmare).

Not pictured: the bathroom and the master bedroom because we haven't done much in those rooms yet.

I have to laugh though because blue is my least favorite paint color. I actually kind of hate it. I always find that blue looks pretty in the store, but then terrible when you actually get it on the wall. I still have no idea how or why my whole house is blue, but I really love it. So maybe it isn't so bad after all.

We still have big plans.

The bathroom needs some work. I want a new tub and to get rid of the blue tub, sink, and toilet.

Our  bedroom (master) is also in need of some serious TLC.

I want to do more work to the three seasons to make it feel like a cabin.

And we desperately want to get rid of the carpet and change it out for wood floors. This will likely be our next project. Carpet is gross, you guys. And I just love the look of wood floors.

A lot of stuff is on hold so Mr. T can focus on professoring and dissertating so we hope to jump back in this summer.

I'm super proud of us, though. I don't think I ever thought about owning a home. Lots of city folks don't really think about that. But it's a lot of fun. I love that we can do whatever we want to the place. I mean, I miss having someone to come fix shit when it's broken, but it's nice that this place can be ours. It can be however we want.

Oh, and just for fun, let's talk about a before and after of Mr. T and me.
